Power of Love Foundation’s provision of long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets, education on malaria prevention, and instruction on proper use and maintenance of nets has gone a long way in eradicating malaria from the recipient communities in Zambia.
To determine if the nets were being used and maintained properly, POL conducted two post-distribution follow-up studies in one rural town. The first study was conducted six months after net distribution and the second, eighteen months after distribution. The results of these studies revealed that for the most part, the nets distributed are in good condition, with the usage of nets at about 98%.
Overall, the distribution of nets and malaria education in Zambia have resulted in a marked reduction in the incidence of malaria, and an increase in school attendance rates as the health of the children improves.
Achievements of the Malaria Prevention Program in 2011/2012
1. POL provided 2000 LLINs and education on prevention of malaria and proper usage of nets to women and children vulnerable to malaria in 2011. For more information, click here.
2. In 2012, an additional 1000 LLINs were provided to vulnerable women and children, coupled with education on malaria prevention and net care.
The provision of LLINs, along with malaria education and training has resulted in a marked reduction in the incidence of malaria overall, and an increase in school attendance rates. Post-distribution studies also revealed that net usage remains at 98% among recipients.
