Semya aims to help address the orphans’ need for recreation and extra-curricular learning as well as new avenues for developing social skills and self-awareness. Many of the orphanages are located in rural areas where the possibilities for activities outside the regular academic curriculum are very limited. The children look forward to the excursions and events organized by Semya which provide fun and interesting opportunities.
Some of the ongoing activities organized for the orphans include:
-A weekly sports club for teen boys from one orphanage, with annual basketball and soccer seasons. In cooperation with a local sports club, Semya also organizes an annual mini-football tournament between eight different orphanages.
-Educational excursions to museums, historical sites, cultural exhibitions or the theatre.
-Recreational events such as ice-skating, swimming, eating out or going to the movies.
-Regular birthday celebrations held at the orphanage—complete with gifts, games, treats and entertainment.
-A yearly week-long camping trip through the scenic Carpathian Mountains, the second longest mountain range in Europe, which stretches across 7 countries. The orphans develop survival skills, team-working abilities and a respect for the environment.
