There is a lack of awareness in some communities when it comes to the Puerto Rican citizens of mature age and their treatment. Many of the mature residents in the homes of the elderly that we have worked with have not received a visit from loved ones in years. Some privately run homes are in top condition, while other public homes are barely scraping by.
We have also been able to assist with emotional and moral support in different homes, by giving encouragement and a listening ear. These residents have lived full and sacrificial lives and many have been forgotten. They must live their existence wondering if they are still remembered or if they have made a difference at all.
By just sitting near them and giving them your friendship they are reminded that someone cares, that they matter and are appreciated.
Our children have organized musical performances to uplift their spirits, and have spent time gleaning words of wisdom from them while bringing cheer into their lives.
One of our projects in Rio Piedras has been to renovate a home for the elderly.
Our volunteers have actively participated in building projects which have renovated the structure of the building and improved the living conditions of the elderly.
