Established in Guatemala in 2009, Nuevos Horizontes is focused on alleviating poverty through humanitarian aid distribution and providing support and extra-curricular events for disadvantaged children living in orphanages and children with terminal illnesses, including HIV/AIDS.
UNICEF estimates that there are more than 370,000 orphans in Guatemala, a country with an estimated 54% living below the poverty line. Nuevos Horizontes unites with volunteers and local and foreign businesses to organize opportunities for disadvantaged children to connect with nature, learn about their environment, nurture spiritual development, and have recreational activities which their institutions are unable to provide due to lack of space or funding. Special programs are also conducted for annual Children’s and Mother’s Days.
A 4,000 ft2 community center is currently under construction in the town of San Lucas, which will eventually include:
Programming for the community center will include youth day camps, overnight camping and sports events for at-risk teenagers, food distribution projects, and medical and dental missions.
Nuevos Horizontes also conducts year-round humanitarian aid initiatives including hundreds of pounds of fresh food collected from local donors and distributed monthly to several children’s homes. Clothing and other basic necessities are also provided to needy children and families.
